"Mondrian are a band from Paris who sing in English, make surreal videos, and dabble in styles that range from ’60s-’70s California pop to Folk to hints of Synthpop. That’s the nutshell version, but, honestly, these labels fail to capture the varied sounds of Mondrian’s first EP: Pop Shop, or the quirkiness of their visual style.Truth be told, Mondrian are still a bit of a mystery to me. Their e-mail asked for a minute to listen to their song “A Kiss A Day,” and a few minutes to watch some videos. While the song was pleasing, it’s the videos (seen below) that convinced me that something interesting was going on with the band. While Mondrian’s musicality is sound, they’re clearly just as interested in the visual aspect of their music. "[...] Il était une fois un groupe de parisiens beaux comme des tableaux mais qui ne pouvaient pas se voir en peinture. Leur truc à eux c’était le mouvement, pas le figé sur une toile. Et ça tombait bien parce qu’ils étaient super forts en musique… et en vidéos. Quand on joue de la pop, pour se démarquer de la foule d’autres groupes « mignons » il n’y qu’une seule solution : avoir du talent. On entre dans le Pop Shop de Mondrian avec les yeux émerveillés d’un enfant de quatre ans le matin de Noël. Que ce soit les voix, les orchestrations casserole-flute-mandoline ou les textes qui font chavirer le cœur, on dévalise le rayon de Tofu fermier loin d’être insipide, on aime se heurter à l’Amour avec l’impression de tomber sur un édredon doux comme la soie, on veut bien ne plus jamais prendre de petit déjeuner s’il ressemble à celui de la planète surf, on voudrait dodeliner de la tête avec l’air d’être un Bisounours Beatles jusqu’à l’année suivante… ne plus jamais quitter cette autre interprétation d’un monde merveilleux : un grand sourire bienveillant, un Monde-riant". POP SHOP/IT'S ONLY ROCK AND FOLK

" [...] Mondrian c’est de la pop chaleureuse, des mélodies guillerettes et joyeuses qui font ressortir notre âme d’enfant. Dès le premier titre « Tofu Farmer » on se met à fredonner « tagada tagada » et comme les bonbons c’est acidulé et doux à la fois. Les notes de flutes, de xylophones et les sifflements rajoutent de l’effet à ce petit côté enfantin. Avec « love collision » même si on comprend rien à l’anglais, à la façon de chanter on ressent que le sujet est plus grave mais la mélodie reste quand même entrainante, joli paradoxe ! « Things that money can’t buy » ajoute un petit brin d’électro à l’album et on aime la manière complètement détachée de chanter de Roman. A noter que sur quelques titres par Demoiselle aux chœurs. On rajoutera une mention spéciale aux paroles du titre "Last Breakfast on Planet Surf".C’est frais, joyeux, il y a même un petit je ne sais quoi qui rappelle la country ! Ne soyez pas surpris si à l’écoute vous vous imaginez courir dans le jardin, vous amusez avec l’arrosoir et finir par vous asseoir mouillé sur l’herbe pour admirer le coucher de soleil ! Allez on est sympa vous pouvez aussi vous imaginer mangeant de la guimauve. L’EP respire la joie de vivre alors pourquoi s’en priver ? Justement ils partagent la scène de l’International le 9 janvier avec Morgan Manifacier et We Were Evergreen : Carrément qu’on y sera !!! Forse la geografia non li aiuta molto, e al contrario di band stellari provenienti dallo stesso lato delle Alpi, non usano quasi niente di digitale. What I love most about this duo is that they do things differently - you can tell they genuinely put their soul into the music they make, yet thankfully without taking themselves too seriously. "There is something very alluring when a group of musicians insist on being called a “Pop Band”. While at this point the term “Pop” is almost ambiguous to the point where can mean anything, Mondrian claim to be the “only Parisian POP band”. Saying that this is bold would be an understatement, and it was be a shame if they weren’t able to back it up. Fortunately, Mondrain are actually quite awesome. Pop is a really fitting term for their sound because while they seem to have many influences, all of the groups that they resemble were palatable to the masses. They sound like a cross between The Byrds and Hot Chip. Their newest single, “Pop Shop” is extremely simple, but the simplicity enables it to become a sort of pop bliss. The track begins with simple drums, and then a delightful, full sounding electronic organ comes in. A few other synths enter, but the most charming part of the song is the vocals. They are light sounding, but also unpolished in a wholehearted way. During the chorus there are harmonies that remind me a lot of The Byrds.
